FOREST SERVICE OPENS CLOSED ROADS FOR OHV USE

Sitka, AKThe new Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) for the Sitka Ranger District is now available, including several newly opened areas. This free, small and easy-to-pack map includes all the possible areas to ride OHVs on the Sitka Ranger District.

The Sitka District MVUM map reopens many of the original “yellow trails”, or routes closed temporarily until habitat protections are in place.   Sitka Ranger District staff worked with the Department of Fish and Game’s Division of Habitat to ensure that all possible yellow roads and trails could be open for OHV riders.

Yellow trails that are now open and listed in the new MVUM map are:
1.        Mud Bay road 75912/trail 3175912
2.        Eagle Creek road 7595/trail 317595 to Sukoi Lake
3.        St. John road 7583/trail 317583
4.        Noxon  road 7574/trail 317574
5.        Katlian  road 7579/trail 317579

Yellows roads/ trails that will not be opened because of resource issues or needs
1.        Mud Bay roads 7591, 75913, 75911, and 759122
2.        Eagle Creek road 7595 portion beyond Sukoi Lake
3.        Nakwasina road
4.        Appleton road 7729
5.        Katlian 75797

The maps are available at the District Office at 204 Siginaka Way or may be downloaded from the FS website at http://www.fs.fed.us/r10/tongass/districts/sitka/index.shtml

Please protect beach grasses and vegetation by staying on the Mud Bay North Beach designated trails.  For questions on this particular area, contact Eric Abele at 747-4280.

Help the Forest Service keep areas open by riding on designated roads and trails.  Be safe, drive responsibly and pack out all trash!
