but I understand what you mean ... there were few that played chess, could
read and write and were at the right position of power.

And what makes you think they are not doing it right now?
Enlightent people make things more complicated and to have them under
control costs a lot, but these are somehow necessary to build all those
machinery. 
IMO we evidence the failure to comprehend this truth by the new
(Wall-Street) elite. 
Manufacturing and knowledge shifted east - so does or will do enlightment.
