This can be adjusted by clicking on the thingies (grey square or blue
triangle) besides the column names ("From", "Received", etc.). If the
thingy is square, it means the column is not used for sorting. If you
repeatedly click on a thingy, it goes from square to upward-pointing
triangle (sort descending using this column) to downward triangle (sort
ascending) back to square again.

So, if you want to have the newest messages on top, click on the thingy
next to "Received" (or "Date" while not used for sorting) until it
becomes an upward-pointing triangle.
