I use unread email notifications on ALL folders, and unlike my wife, I
have over 8500 folders in my ~/mail folders though I don't have nearly as
many emails as she does.

I don't know enough at this level, but I do know that Dovecot has built-in
indexing, and when I switched from UWImap to Dovecot years ago, the speed
of Squirrelmail increased ten-fold, or more. Actually, it went from being
almost unusable to being very high-performing.

So I still maintain that Squirrelmail is NOT the problem.
