I don't know enough at this level, but I do know that Dovecot has built-in indexing, and when I switched from UWImap to Dovecot years ago, the speed of Squirrelmail increased ten-fold, or more. Actually, it went from being almost unusable to being very high-performing. So I still maintain that Squirrelmail is NOT the problem.
