If you are reading the same mails and sending mails from the exact
same user account without problem, then what else might it be except a
problematic browser or computer? (or end user problem?)  Without a
reliable way to reproduce, it seems like the best you can do is ask
the user for the exact series of actions that caused it - which emails
they were reading, what language they were sending in, etc.  Turn up
your PHP logging all the way and tell them to report the exact time of
the logout and see if you can find matching log events in your logs.

Otherwise, SM doesn't usually log anyone out randomly.

Finally, note that 1.4.9 has known security holes, which is the main
reason you want to upgrade.  Unless you keep your clients patched with
the security updates, you are doing them a disservice not to upgrade
IMO.
