Okay, here is my twopenneth :)
Whilst aspects of Jan's points are undeniably true, overall, I concur with Måns and others: I can't see a compelling reason to simply remove libmagic at this point. Better, would be to improve the automatic file type detection (especially for streams) such that the --magic option (whether libmagic is ultimately retained or not) is not needed.
