I don't think features should be removed unless it's both
causing a maintainence burden AND unused (with appropriate
deprecation notice for a few years).

libmagic is common anyways (because file(1) is), so it's not
likely to be wasting users disk space or increasing download
times; either.

Honestly, libmagic is probably better-maintained than sox itself
these days and I've been seeing regular bugfixes to it in
Debian.

And in my experience, few users follow mailing lists (or even
blog posts/etc) and will not notice breaking changes until a
distro ships something.

Fwiw, I use libmagic outside of sox and file(1), and I've never
had to deal with API or ABI breakage, there.  And the popularity
of dynamic linking means most users don't have to deal with it
specifically for sox, either.
