Honestly, libmagic is probably better-maintained than sox itself these days and I've been seeing regular bugfixes to it in Debian. And in my experience, few users follow mailing lists (or even blog posts/etc) and will not notice breaking changes until a distro ships something. Fwiw, I use libmagic outside of sox and file(1), and I've never had to deal with API or ABI breakage, there.
