I have RedHat 9 here, which does not autodect them and I wonder if they
are broken or if I must configure them by hand - and if yes, how?

You could check with lsmod if the network device modules are loaded (tulip or de4x5 for the decchip card or 3c59x for the 3com) or use the ifconfig command to see if the cards are configured?
just for the records and if someone has a simal situation: For the 3Com 3C900 there are different dirvers depending on the Version of the Adapter. In short:

Card Driver
--------------------------------------
3C900 3c59x from Donald Becker
3C900B	3C90x from 3Com

It is also quiet difficult if you have more than one 3Com Card in the machine - the different drivers "grab" them in an not so easy predictable way. See the 3Com Doku fo detail.
