The 3c900 combo did work for me (some time ago, before I upgraded it to
a 905 combo).
Did you check the network configuration under the 'system settings'
menu?
You could check with lsmod if the network device modules are loaded
(tulip or de4x5 for the decchip card or 3c59x for the 3com) or use the
ifconfig command to see if the cards are configured?
