It may be a lot of trial and error, but if all the boxes have the same
hardware, you may want to compile a custom kernel and distribut it
across the network.  Custom kernels (if done correctly) can greatly
speed up Linux and X.

There was also something in the Linux Journal about DMA mode in ide
hard drives to speed up Linux.  I forget the name of the config file,
anyone???
