Thanks for the reply, Stephen.  Hmmmm... This must be from Fedora, as there 
appears to be no hotplug-base in the "RH9".  At least "up2date -i 
hotplug-base" seems to indicate so and I get:

[root@laptop2 root]# up2date --showall | grep hotplug
hotplug-2002_04_01-17
hotplug-gtk-2002_04_01-17
