Uh,Oh! The thread has gone out of the way. The issue here is not if the primary should fall within a particular range but the no. of heads win needs to read the partition table.

Linux reverts back the no of heads to 16 if the partition table is created by it, but then win or dos boot floppy is unable to read it.
Never had a problem yet with Linux and Windows writing different partition tables, so I can't help you. Sorry! IIRC, though, all my partitions are 16/63/X... I don't recall anything using 255 heads.
