cdrecord -scanbus failure

While running cdrecord -scanbus (yes, as root) to locate my HP
CD-Writer, I got this result:

Cdrecord 2.0 (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2002 J?rg Schilling
cdrecord: No such file or directory. Cannot open '/dev/pg*'. Cannot open
SCSI driver.
cdrecord: For possible targets try 'cdrecord -scanbus'. Make sure you
are root.
cdrecord: For possible transport specifiers try 'cdrecord dev=help'.

The HP device is /dev/hdd and is actually set up as the slave device to
an Asus DVD-ROM drive.

How can I get 'cdrecord -scanbus' (and therefore cdrecord) to work?

Thanks a lot
