Does an easy way exist to install a video player on RH 9 that will play *.wmv

Would installing xine be any easier?

Why isn't xine or mplayer in the RH 9 distro?

RH ships a neutered xine, but you'll want to replace it with a fully functional version

Dude, just bite the bullet and install mplayer and xine, with all the dependencies -

I got thepackages from freshrpms.net and both of them play windows media files just fine
