It's the drivers thing. I wouldn't generalise that statement. Example. My Linux box prints superior photographs on HP Deskjet 940C than Windows XP. Furthermore, for some strange reason Windows keep recognising this piece of hardware again and again, every time I log in, and reports that it was unable to install it! The printer is connected via USB, and it's in fact already installed on XP. How about that? No nonsense of that kind in Linux, regardless of LPR or CUPS.
