I have those bruised eardrums. My amp. is only 50W per channel, but W2K, bless it, plays that irritating welcome tune before it sets the saved mixer settings. And it plays it at full volume. Boy did it hurt. The only way to fix it is to turn off the login sound.

Alsa's approach of muting everything by default is exactly the right thing to do. Basically it ensures you only un-mute the channels you need and generally gives better sound. Especially on this laptop where "phone" seems to be a good source of white noise ...
