This is "similar" to what I have....which is:

/dev/sda1           /mnt/usb       vfat    noauto,user,rw 0 0

And for my mount point I simply have...

drwxr-xr-x    2 root     root         4096 May  7 22:16 usb

I don't have a "shortcut" on my desktop I simply have 

alias mntu='mount /dev/sda1'

in my .bashrc

This works just fine...

I have never heard of entries in fstab and directories getting deleted
on a reboot.  If that were to happen your CD wouldn't work either.
