I have no idea. Last time I used one for an SB AWE32, it was 3-pin.

No. Either the software supports reading CDs directly or not.
I think Konqueror supports it, enter   audiocd:/   when an
Audio CD is inserted and tray is closed. Other applications
are xmms-cdread, a plug-in for XMMS (in the Fedora Linux queue
here https://bugzilla.fedora.us/show_bug.cgi?id=280).
