Yet, [listening only on localhost] seems to be a change from RH8. I don't recall setting the sendmail DAEMON_OPTIONS this way. Any insights?

No, it's been this way for quite a while. It may even have been like this before 8.0. Basically setting a system up with an SMTP listener only on localhost is less prone to security problems -- for those that don't need inter-machine mail (and a lot don't) this is a good thing.

It's not a hindrance to inter-machine mail by
any stretch of the imagination - and I imagine
that localhost-only mail would be fairly useless.

You can send smtp mail on a stock RH setup
with no problem, you just can't receive smtp
mail from external systems.

Sorry, I should've made myself clear. By "inter-machine mail" I meant both sending and receiving e-mail. However, you do underline the point that sending is enough for most people :-)
