It's not a hindrance to inter-machine mail by any stretch of the imagination - and I imagine that localhost-only mail would be fairly useless.
You can send smtp mail on a stock RH setup with no problem, you just can't receive smtp mail from external systems.
Sorry, I should've made myself clear. By "inter-machine mail" I meant both sending and receiving e-mail. However, you do underline the point that sending is enough for most people :-)
