I *definitely* can't shutdown as user from the desktop. However, I can logout (most of the time), and then shutdown from the GDM. On the many occassions when the desktop hangs after selecting "logout", I resort to CTRL-ALT-BKSPC to get out of the desktop. I don't know if others besides us two have experienced this problem, though ...
