gnome session hangs when logging out

Hi all,

I have a strange behavior of gnome desktop with Red
Hat 9 (which didn't happen with Red Hat 8).
Gnome session hangs when I logout (or try to shutdown
from Gnome) i.e. I can move the mouse but that's it. A
few minutes later Gnome usually decides to logout (or
shutdown).
I have a work around which is to become root and do
'shutdown -h now' (which works fine and immediately).
Still if someone has a clue about what's going on I'd
be interested...
