Yes hdd is a burner.  I removed the hdd=ide-scsi from grub, and now it's
stable, at least for the last 12 hours which is a vast improvement over
5 minutes :-)

This same exact system worked fine with all the Phoebe betas with the
ide-scsi setting enabled.  weird huh...
