Next time you print something, right-click on the printer icon that
appears (next to the RHN icon) and select 'Quit', to remove the
printer panel icon from the panel.

Incidentally, even with keeping the same socket connection open to
CUPS all the time, still a new log line is generated for each
request. :-(
