I read the whole thread after your question. Lots of repetitious non helpful information supplied without context of the problem you're having. ;o) Let me try to be more helpful.

Yeah, I realized that because of being in a hurry I actually wasted bandwith and people's time by not being as accurate as required. So, I'll try to be as accurate as possible.

Can you do the following:

- Run "lspci -vvn" and post the results to the list.

I don't know what to say!!! I already did so and saved it to a disk, but now when I tried to attach it the stupid Windows 2000 couldn't read it! and I couldn't get back to the class to run it again.

- Upload your X server log file somewhere so it can be looked at for clues as to what is going wrong

Sorry i don't have that anymore because we had to install RH Linux again for the class.

- Upload the config file that was used when the above log file was generated.

... and this one too.

I'll try to advise you once you've posted this info somewhere. Hopefully we can get you up and running.

Actually, I think I'll try to give more details about what's happening:
* First of all, the PCs are Compaq Evo desktop PCs with an Intel 845 dispaly, and we have RH Linux 8.0 installed and running successfully or all the machines with no problems at all.
* After one of the students finished the installation, he chose a high resolution (1024x768) that cannot be displayed by the monitor we have in the class (14" monitors), and he *didn't test* it.
* After he restarted the PC and tried to login, ofcourse the screen was just unviewable.
* I tried to run redhat-config-xfree86 without any options, and ofcourse it attempts to run X, in which I cannot do anything.
* So, I tried to use redhat-config-xfree86 with the options as mentioned before, but in still vain
- Like I said before I used the options as:
# redhat-config-xfree86 --set-resoltion=800x600
# redhat-config-xfree86 --set-resolution 800x600
# redhat-config-xfree86 --set-resolution 800 600
# redhat-config-xfree86 --set-resolution=800 600
* ... but the problem with these is that it just displays the syntax of the command
* I also tried to add the --nogui and/or --reconfig with and without the --set-resolution option just to run the config at the shell without X, and it just shows the syntax of use, or just gets me back to the shell.

My request is, if you could *please* try to launch the redhat-config-xfree86 *without* X, i.e. on tty1 for example, and see if the command is working.

Hope this helps.
TTYL

.. and I hope this is clear enough now.

many thanks and apologies,
