I've only done an install with a 7902 controller once so I am not an 
expert and, in my case, the kernel from Adaptec worked.  I read your 
message more closely and I see that you already tried that route.

The 7899 and 7902 are not the same.  I am guessing you already know 
that but I mention it JIC.

Sorry.  I cannot think of anything else to try.  Have you tried 
writing the maintainer (modinfo aic79xx) or asking on the kernel 
mailing list?  The module wasn't offically added until 2.4.20 but 
Redhat has it in their 2.4.18 kernel.
