Thanks all for responding.  I think the problem lies with the fact that
the nic was an isa card.  I replaced it with a pci card and the
installation was happy.

Unfortunately, I never did get the iptables up and running correctly
but now my original firewall is back up and working so I no longer need
this one.

Might want to check,   "dmesg | grep eth"
and make sure the hardware is being found also.
