I tried putting it on the desktop like you mentioned and had the same
results - I couldn't resize it. I also noticed it looked 'blurry' so I
thought I'd give it some further investigation (why not!) I noticed it
was a bitmap (in /usr/share/pixmaps) so I thought maybe nautilus had
trouble resizing bitmaps. I converted it to a png using the Gimp, and
then pointed the mozilla mail launcher to the new png. Still couldn't
resize it. I then resized the png x3 (agin using the gimp) and voila,
the new size was automatically detected, it wasn't blurry, and it can be
resized on the desktop as well.

If you want some help with these steps let me know.

Iain,

Remarkable!

I would, in fact, appreciate having help duplicating the steps you've taken in solving this problem. While I knew what type of file was involved in this case, I had no idea that it was capable of alteration in the way you describe. I'll look forward to your follow-up.

Thank you!
