I like USB for its hot plugability. Also some USB keyboards (eg mine)
come with a USB port for your mouse which would leave one free

i got a PS/2 keyboard (worked great immediately upon connection),

Missed the start of this, but why not a combo? I have a Focus FK-7200. It's a USB keyboard+trackball.
only 2 buttons, but for most work it's fine, and much easier that carying both around for a notebook.

but the logitech USB optical mouse doesn't work yet. "usbview"
sees it, but only the touchpad on the laptop still works.

Good luck.
While the trackball on the keyboard works fine, I have a 2 button mouse that once worked, then stopped. Still haven't figured out why. It does work on windoze box at work. I didn't use it much, and had changed a lot of software between the last "working" setup and when I noticed it quit. It is listed by lsusb correctly. It just won't work with gpm or X.
