Aaron: Psyche is Red Hat's first attempt to attract Desktop users. I've
read one or two articles, where Red Hat employees are quoted as saying
they don't believe most Desktop users will be able to use it, without a
System Administrator to help them.
I'm a Newbie. We began using Red Hat Linux, on a very limited basis,
with version 7.0. I'd purchased Mandrake 7.2 ("Wal-Mart Linux"), but I
bought a book with the Red Hat 7.0 CD's and I like the solid,
conservative, installation procedures in Red Hat much more.
Curious about the new "Personal Desktop" installation, I did one on our
oldest box. With 2 languages (U.S. English & Colombian Spanish) and with
2 Desktops (KDE and Gnome) it was about 1555 MB. I was surprised at that
size, because when I do a "Custom" installation, with 2 languages and 2
Desktops and a lot more, it totals about 1725 MB. I'm going to nuke
that Personal Desktop installation and do a "Custom" installation on
that box too.
My own take is that Psyche has some rough spots, but I'm willing to bet
that versions 8.1 and beyond will attract many more Desktop newbies to
Red Hat Linux. Microsoft (famous for their "Win-Crash" software, but we
*love* their Natural Elite keyboards) has finally taken notice of Linux.
