Have a look at /boot/config-<kernel-version>. I noticed other USB
options, have you set these as well? They may not all be necessary. I
cut out some others that were in there for the sake of readability. I
noticed usb_kbd and usb_mouse were not set though... can this be the
real config file they used?? Oh well, keep hacking :)

CONFIG_USB=m
CONFIG_USB_LONG_TIMEOUT=y
CONFIG_USB_DEVICEFS=y
# USB Controllers
CONFIG_USB_UHCI=m
CONFIG_USB_UHCI_ALT=m
CONFIG_USB_OHCI=m
CONFIG_USB_EHCI_HCD=m
# USB Human Interface Devices (HID)
CONFIG_USB_HID=m
CONFIG_USB_HIDDEV=m
CONFIG_USB_HIDINPUT=m
# CONFIG_USB_KBD is not set
# CONFIG_USB_MOUSE is not set
