I've tried that too. The problem affects all users, including root, so
rebuilding one user's dot-gnome directories will not fix it.

There have been no tty errors. The error messages I saw immediately
prior to this problem were:

Error
(-) Application "gnome-panel" (process 1115) has crashed due
    to a fatal error.
    (Aborted)
Error
(-) Application "battstat-applet-2" (process 1140) has crashed
    due to a fatal error.
    (Segmentation fault)

These resisted clearing, and repeated many times. When they ultimately
did cease, G2 was useless.
