Check freshrpms.net for xine packages built for RH8.0. There are also a
number of other media players there. I'd actually recommend installing
apt and synaptic from that site. There's some documentation there on
using apt on RedHat. That way you don't have to try and figure out which
dozen lib packages you need.

If you get the right codec packages, xine will play many .avi files. I'm
not sure about wmv or asf off the top of my head. Your absolute best bet
for windows media support is to buy the Crossover Plugin
(www.codeweavers.com), which allows you to install Windows Media Player
6.4, including the browser plugin. The Crossover Plugin software costs
$20-$30, but I've found it well worth it. It also supports the QuickTime
player/plugins and a number of other Windows-only plugins. A demo is
available, and they have great support and a money-back guarantee if
you're not happy with it.

The release notes touch on it somewhat, as well as
http://www.redhat.com/advice/speaks_80mm.html
The main issue is that some of the dvd support and probably some of the
codec support in many of the linux media players is in a legal grey
area, if not outright illegal.
