The problem might be Athlon related.  I have two Intel P4 based systems that I have installed 8.0 on.  Initial testing revealed that you can't push the standard nv module past 16 bit color successfully.  I then downloaded the source rpms for the NVIDIA 3123 kernel & GLX from their web site, rebuilt (rpmbuild -ba XXX), installed, and have had no problems since.
