I wonder if this is feasible:

Re-clean-install, and not select KDE for installation.

Download KDE from KDE and run with that.

I guess the question would be, by not installing KDE do you really not
install all of KDE, or has the co-mingling of Gnome and KDE caused some
of KDE to slop over into other package sets, as seen by the installer?

Or one of the virtual terminals, which I forgot to try in my moment of
