The default is to enable DMA on harddisks, but not on CD-ROM devices. 
You will have to manually edit either /etc/modules.conf (options
ide-cd dma=1) or /etc/sysconfig/harddiskhdX where X is your CD-ROM
device, hardiskhdc for /dev/hdc.
