Considering this is quite a long time after the Red Hat Linux 8.0 release, and also considering that the XFree86 that is in 7.3 a good 6 months before that, and I have never heard of this problem before, I would consider it very isolated and non-common. You might want to start X in a sane bit depth though. 8bit is basically considered legacy. Choose 24bit depth for best results. -- Mike A.
