Just force uninstall Xft for now until the Oct 18th packages show up. rpm -e Xft --nodeps Then install the rpms >when installing XFree86 >/var/tmp/rpm-tmp.xxxx: line 1: xftcache: command not found That is a bug in the ttfonts package you have installed, and is not fixable. Someone in their glorious wonder thought it was a good idea to have xftcache to be called from a trigger script in ttfonts before. xftcache is obsolete now and no longer present in the system in RHL 8.0 and later. Harmless message though, just ugly, but unavoidable. >telinit 1; telinit 3; login; startx > >Warning: font renderer for ".pfa" registered more than once >Warning: font renderer for ".pfb" registered more than once Hmm. Report that in bugzilla. >/usr/bin/gnome-session: error while loading shared libraries: >libXft.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Try a reboot. >run ldconfig; startx Or that. ;o) Perhaps I've got an ldconfig missing from somewhere... I'll have a look. >Big red cursor :) Yep, intended. That's the XFree86 default cursor now. I'll likely change it to default to the whiteglass theme instead of redglass sometime. >The text cursor has quite a shadow. The shadows are intentional "features". Dropshadow. >Add the ldconfig to the readme? Shouldn't be needed. I didn't need it on my 8.0 system. Nobody else has reported it... could be a quirk on your system, or could be a weird corner case in the rpm. I'll check it though and ensure all library subpackages have ldconfig in them. >What are some fun new toys to try here? xrandr It's fairly self explanatory, but "man xrandr" for details. Note that RandR resizing works, but is "in deep development" so it isn't perfect yet. Rotation doesn't work at all yet. Also, you may end up with horrible refresh rates too. That is either fixed now or being fixed. Also note that neither GNOME nor KDE, nor their respective panels, nor any window managers that come with RHL 8.0 understand or expect RandR to change the resolution of your X desktop. As such... "weird things happen(TM)". ;o) It is cool to play with though. The CTRL-ALT +/- is currently broken too. Known and being worked on. For those REALLY brave.. CVS version of metacity supports RandR now, as does the CVS version of gnome-panel, but they require CVS gtk+ also. Jeremy Katz has tried this and has an RandR desktop working nicely if I understand correctly. The 20021018 packages I'm building have RandR improvements also, so some problems may be fixed now. I don't test it though, you guys do. ;o) Let me know if it works, so I can try it out too. It built! Ship it! <evil grin> Have fun! -- Mike A.
