Hello.
Is the domain that sendmail resolves a fully qualified domain ?. In example if your IP is 192.168.1.1 the /etc/hosts must be:
192.168.1.1 machine.domain.com
or
192.168.1.1 machine.localhost.localdomain

I believe you need the FQDN and the base hostname. Check out the following site
