I moved from RedHat Enterprise 3 on an old server to Enterprise 4 on a
new server. All the configuration files for samba were transferred.
The new system is using the same network setup as the old except that
Redhat 4 comes with Selinux, a new security program.
The samba program version on Enterprise 4 is 3.0.10. The samba
version on Enterprise 3 is 3.0.9.
The problems are that chemps can be seen in the Network neighborhood
of the Windows computers on the network, but you cannot log in through
that icon. You must search for chemps.chem.brown.edu and then log in.
nmblookup -M chemistry
brings up a random Windows computer on the network
nmblookup -B chemps __SAMBA__
says that __SAMBA__ is not found
smbclient -L chemps -N
Domain=[CHEMISTRY] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.0.10-1.4E.2]
Server Comment

CHEMPS chemps - Chemistry Samba Server
Workgroup Master
--------- -------
CHEMISTRY
DLAB GC207-SVR
ROSEPETRUCK GC244-NTSVR1
where the Workgroup CHEMISTRY will eventually be filled in with
chemps. The other strange thing about this listing that the
workgroups included in the listing are workgroups that are not on
chemps' subnet; they are on 128.148.171.
The workgroups on chemps' subnet, 128.148.68. are not listed.
I have run without Selinux, but this makes no difference.
Any ideas?
Side note that may be related. Mac users used to be able to print to
printers on chemps. Now the macs have to use the full server name,
ie. chemps.chem.brown.edu.
The new system has inet6 as well as inet running on it. Does this
cause interference?
