Re: X won't start for root - okay for other user

I can see no errors. I cleared out the XFree86.log file and tried to boot as root. I exported the contents to another file and cleared the contents of the log file again. I then started X as the user for which if works. Again, I exported the log file to a text file. I then ran diff -b 'file-from-root' 'file-from-minitwr' and the differences reported are:

---output
16c16
< (==) Log file: "/var/log/XFree86.0.log", Time: Sat Dec 6 17:31:48 2003
---
> (==) Log file: "/var/log/XFree86.0.log", Time: Sat Dec 6 17:37:06 2003
----end output
Beyond this I don't really know where to go to look for the problem.

Pointers of where to start looking appreciated. I tried to capture standared output with startx >> XFree86-startup-messages but the file is always empty.

Tnx,

Bob

Hi,
I have RH9 installed. I cannot get X to start for root.

Ideas?? This is bugging me.

You need to provide more clues. "It won't start" is meaningless. You
need to tell people if there are any errors displayed. You need to tell
people how you are "starting X". Then you need to, possibly, look in
your /var/log/XFree86.0.log file for information.
