I'm probably jumping into this thread late...

If kudzu doesn't pick up your NIC at bootup then I wouldn't expect it
to pick it up when invoked manually.

Your card probably won't show up in /var/log/messages or
/var/log/dmesg unless a module was loaded for it.  Ifconfig
wouldn't show anything besides lo unless you already had an 
interface configured.

To check if the card is seen, check the output of lspci (add -v
for verbose output).

Browsing through Intel's site, I found a download for a driver
which mentions support for your card.  It's a newer version than the
one included with RH9 ( 5.2.20 vs 5.0.43 ).  Maybe trying the
drive available for download will get your card running (keep in 
mind that you'll probably have to reinstall the driver every time
you upgrade your kernel).
