Could you please point to a few of them?  I have never seen
ÿÿseveral hundred pages longÿÿ public manuals for any hard drive.
I'm pretty sure many people on this list would appreciate your
efforts, since you seem to be in the know.

http://www.hitachigst.com - "technical library" then choose a drive leads you to something like:

Where the "OEM Specification" is the 343 page detailed specification in hitachi/ibm-speak.

I'm guessing other manufacturers might call it something else, and probably hide it better too, because I can't think of having seen them easily findable online.
