Ok, I've done a fresh build of 2.4.18 and get exactly the same problem.

I've also tested with between 5 and 8 disks and get exactly the same problem 
every time.  Once the weekend is over I'll try with lower numbers, but it 
isn't looking good...

Anything else I can do to provide useful information to assist in 
identifying whether I've got dodgy hardware or found a weird bug?
