And I'd be interested to hear of an actual side-by-side comparison on comparable hardware where sendmail using pipes beats SMTP on a LAN.
I don't have that but a comparison between the main open-source mta's (all out of the box, no optimizations for any of them) revealed sendmail sucks the most - it took almost 3x as long as postfix & exim to send the same email to the same number of recipients (of course using the same script). qmail was in the middle.
