Although my reading skills in German have long since eroded (55 years ago since my last class), my pronunciation skills are still intact.  Reading the German version aloud was a treat.  What a beautiful poem with double entendre built in.

The term "Lotosblume" appears to be a poetic creation of the German writer Heinrich Heine, put to music by Robert Schumann around 1840.

Unlike "Lotosblüte" (= blossom) the term does not exist in the German dictionary (Duden).

It was the time of the German version of the French and American revolution which eventually failed and prompted many Germans to emigrate in the 1850s.

The alternative spelling "Lotus" appears to be legit although less common.
