Being close to Chicago, I used to run in and shop Calumet and Helix.
Maybe they are both gone now. The best thing was being able to be hands
on with a variety of items before you bought. Of course, you probably
then went online and bought from a cheaper source. Transitional times
for brick and mortar it seems. A friend who owns a local camera store
is just squeaking by with a University with photo courses in town and
giving great service.

The other day I drove up to Boston for an hour's private coaching
session on PS CS 6 RAW converter at Levine's. Last fall I stopped in
there to get the full, hands-on lowdown on tools for improving DSLR
video. I was unwilling to purchase anything at that time, but brick
and mortar stores a really valuable for that sort of shopping.
It is interesting to me that my online searches for products over the
last 15 years have never led me to Calumet.
