I agree with those statements.   I think Annie Libowitz is a total B!$&@ but other don't.    When I was an assistant Photographers where dicks all the time.   One of Tomoko's first question to me when we started dating was, " Do yo treat your assistance like shit?"   I just smiled and laughed.  She then said.   Why are all photographers such a holes to their assistance?   That answer was easy.   They all suck at reading my mind.

It always pissed me off to go into a friend’s studio and find (for example) a naked model sitting on the edge of a bathtub with a shower running behind her waiting for the photographer to get off the phone, get his act together, or get his head out of someplace dark and make the shot. Among my few important rules in photography is: Never feck over a model. Word will get out the you’re a dick and then good luck at hiring models at all.
I know shooters (AL and others) who think they are royalty. I hired a former Leibowitz assistant in DK, and wow, he almost scared my curly hair straight with his stories. Later when I got to talk to the great goddess herself about a certain Mamiya lens, I got it on the phone. Nobody I know is better than anybody else. I keep telling people: I’m just a guy.

I don’t know them. Are they? It’s mostly kids behind who come along and cll us oldsters liars like you’re doing right here with me. Ansel was a good teacher if you stuck your pride in a sock and obeyed his directions. But he wasn’t perfectly nice all the time -- I’m not either as you already know.

I see Ansel as a photographer who was at his best before 1950. He was a great publicist and promoted photography in general to sell his own reputation. I guess nobody you knew ever got promised a box of 55PN, huh? I’m still waiting and somehow I don’t think it’s coming.

I might have when my father was at the workshops but I would have been between 5 and 8 when he was going every year.  Im still going to trust willy and john about adams.  I spent a lot of time with them. So between them and my father I am going to go with the gracious adams stories and not the jan version.

Ansel was not a very nice guy to talented photographers coming along. I’m glad you’re happy with sugarcoating his memories, as I am not. The worst part about getting older and still having a good memory is that kids like you come along behind and call us liars. He hated competitors and if you could lift a 4x5, you were a competitor.

The best thing AA ever did for me was to tell me I would never become a photographer.
