I'm just learning to use the M9, trust me! I've shot 35mm and 120
for years, with a variety of tools, and I'm still learning how to
"visualize" a digital image. I "know" what film will do, under most
circumstances, but digital is still a bit mysterious for me.
It's been, for me, a great relief to not be circumscribed by the
limitations of film - especially the color bias. It seems
unbelievable in this day and age to have to carry different films and
a multitude of camera bodies to adapt to changing light conditions of
a full day shoot and yet that's what I heard from Galen Rowell back
in 1996 when I took a workshop with him.
And then there were the limitations of being stuck with a single ISO.
And the cost.
And the wait.
No thanks.
I realize we've traded a number of things for this new luxury of
being able to "develop" our images ourselves - jobs have vanished
into thin air, skills which approached sheer wizardry reside now in
the mists of history. We can now see our problems as we make them.
And have the opportunity to fix them right then and there.
As a landscape photographer I can now correct errors made in the
field which would have been wasted money only 10 years ago.
And our personal time is now gobbled up with taking this new control.
But I would not trade this new power for all the tea in China.
Shoot RAW, Ken, and master the new digital skills.
