As the ultimate blunt instrument, you can reinstall the program you want
associated with these file types; and it will then, as part of the
installation, associate itself with the file types.

Sounds like a good idea. May be what I'll end up having to do. Thanks David.

What has happened is that the program you tried and then uninstalled
changed the file association for that extension (to associate jpeg files
with itself, for example), but didn't change it back when uninstalled.

Many imaging programs will insist on, or give you the option of,
associating image file types they understand with that program.  When you
double-click a file, it uses the file association to figure out what
program to open the file in.

As several people have explained, you can change them back manually.

Depending on what programs you want to associate them with, some programs
can be told to grab (again) the files they want, which will also fix the
associations back they way you had them before.  Some programs check this
each time they start up, and either just do it or ask you if you want them
to.

As the ultimate blunt instrument, you can reinstall the program you want
associated with these file types; and it will then, as part of the
installation, associate itself with the file types.
