it appears that whatever this 'thing' is, it's in my computer and is unchangeable
I tried a CD on my hubs laptop and it works just fine. But on my computer, all the files have changed. I can open the photos, work with them and save them. It's just that all the tiny icons in the folders now look like system files instead of picture files. O, well. Live and learn the hard way.
I do have an old Photoshop 6.0 and that is fine for the little bit I do. It's just aggravating to have everything change on me when I didn't ask for it.
thanks everyone!

I'm guessing that you don't have Adobe Photoshop or Bridge?
That would do it.
Otherwise in Apple.... CTRL or right click on the picture file; click "open with"; go to the bottom of the list and click "Other"; select the program you want to open the files by default.. ALSO check the little box that says "Always open with" that will associate all of that type of file with that program.
But I guess you have probably tried that...
How many pictures are we talking about here? If it's a couple hundred jpegs, you could zip them into a folder, send them to me and I'd change them in Bridge for you and send them back.... Or one of the windoze guys could do it in Irfanview in a flash!

You can change the registered file type within the OS. What operating system are you using?
